Friday, May 1 :: Landsberg-am-Lech, Germany

Friday, May 1 :: Landsberg-am-Lech, Germany :: 40 km / 83 km total

Another super-pleasant day, even nicer than yesterday, with yesterday's overcast-almost rain being replaced by today's sunshine. An early punishing climb in Schongau had Liz realizing that, ok, cycling in Germany wasn't going to be THAT easy. But the road levelled out for 15km and we hammered along, now directly on the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, with frequent signs telling us so. A descent and 13%, 2km-long climb woke us up again, but again, the level terrain on the other side had us flying. We covered the 40km to Landsberg-am-Lech in about 3 hours, including stops and a bit of "footwork" on the hills.

Landsberg-am-Lech is a larger tourist town, but most tourists seem to be Germans themselves. We walked the ancient town walls, had some Indian food (yeah!!!), and caught up with our blogging. A bit more touristy stuff tonight, then off to the 1/4-million-population town of Augsburg tomorrow. Really, Germany and this trip could not have started off much better.

Setting up the pole for May Day (= Labour Day).

The route sometimes became hardpacked gravel. A great change of scenery, and fine on my 700x28's
